Sometime in the last two weeks, The Last Emperor has managed to flip from 3rd to 1st (by a good distance) in their discography in my mind. Judicator was formed in 2012 after guitarist/songwriter Tony Cordisco and vocalist/lyricist John Yelland met at a Blind Guardian concert two years previous. This album is fantastic in every way and it is hard to imagine how the next one could be even better but somehow, they will find a way. He shares lead vocal duties with main vocalist John Yelland in this one track to bring it that little extra piece of epic, hitting the spot just right with melodic punctuation and a mighty chorus. It reminds me of last year’s Tanagra release, another album that probably would have been auto-top 10 material with some editing. Judicator is an American power metal band. Still they’re marching on… Ever marching on…. Great review! It was always going to be hard for Judicator to top The Last Emperor in my mind, but Let There Be Nothing comes pretty damn close. Bottom line: Judicator are one of the most criminally underrated power metal bands active today. Yet while the tempos are almost universally locked into high gear, the beats-per-minute count is strangely static. Enter The Last Emperor, the fourth LP from these Arizonans that sees them returning to the historically based subject matter of their first two albums. Bottom line: Judicator are one of the most criminally underrated power metal bands active today. Too much. His high range is actually a little cleaner and more intelligible and his low range is just as badass. © diskunion company limited all rights reserved. It’s seriously uncanny, and the genuine emotion he displays generally covers over the few overly-cheesy lyrical moments that occur from time to time on Let There Be Nothing — the sappy slow portions of “Strange to the World” being the worst offenders.

On the whole, The Last Emperor plays like a seamless fusion of Iron Maiden’s more progressive material and the speedy grittiness of Battalions-era Blind Guardian. Rating: 3.5/5.0 Now I see it for what it truly is: a legitimately great album of this genre and the pinnacle of what the band has aimed to achieve since its inception. Go on, throw your tomatoes! Releases Worldwide: March 30th, 2018, Huck N’ Roll’s and Eldritch Elitist’s Top Ten of 2018, Dire Peril – The Extraterrestrial Compendium Review, Yer Metal Is Olde: Queensrÿche – Operation: mindcrime. Releases Worldwide: July 24th, 2020, Huck N’ Roll’s and Eldritch Elitist’s Top Ten of 2018, Corrective Measures: Blind Guardian Twilight Orchestral – Legacy of the Dark Lands, El Cuervo’s and Diabolus in Muzaka’s Top Ten of 2018, Mark Z.’s and L. Saunders’ Top Ten of 2018, Texas Murder Crew – Everyone’s Last Breath Review, Tis trve, we tried it and now he’s twice the size. “Queen of all Cities” The guitars often present themselves on equal footing with the vocals, providing a steady flow of rapid fire chugs, raging whirlwind leads, and occasional acoustic interplay on “Antioch.” The bass guitar even gets a few spots to shine on “Queen of all Cities,” a move that’s especially enjoyable considering how their source of inspiration hasn’t released a song with an audible bassline since the 90s. After Yelland’s beautiful harmonized intro to first track “Let There Be Light,” the rest of the band comes in with a triumphant Blind Guardian gallop to set the historical stage, painting a picture of a world overrun by barbarians and in need of saving.

While it may not prove to be the power metal release of 2018 as some claim, it is still a damn good listen and an album that no fan of the genre should miss out on. The Last Emperor shows Judicator’s dynamics and is expressive without being an experimental, overlong drab, and with the songwriting on point just as much as the musical delivery of each member it carries the recipe for the Arizona quartet’s finest output yet, bringing plenty of power and a well told storyline through both evocative lyrics and densely well laid melodic pieces and intricate riffing. But this is the first time ever, for me, where the removal or alteration of the lyrics would detract from the overall experience. So now Judicator return to the arena with a coherent, cohesive and concise slice of dynamic power metal that would certainly make Blind Guardian sit up and tremble. This is the first album with new guitarist Michael Sanchez and he fits in perfectly, helping the band pick up right where they left off on the last album. Albums: King of Rome, Sleepy Plessow, At the Expense of Humanity, The Last Emperor, Let There Be Nothing.. Members: Tony Cordisco, John Yelland, Jordan Elcess, Balmore, Ulises Hernandez.. Judicator will sneak up on you with this one! Their previous LP, The Last Emperor, focused heavily on the crusades of the middle ages and came across as the perfect blend of early Blind Guardian mixed with the more progressive side of Iron Maiden. But for some reason, I was compelled to keep listening and listening (and listening) to The Last Emperor.
