So when we get to Spain and there are mentions of Comrade Eric, Pope Teilhard, a Georgian dissident Communist...it feels a little obvious, somehow. The story opens in June on the graduation night for Nantucket High. I normally love all of her books, but this one just wasn't that great for these reasons: It's high school graduation on Nantucket. Bureaucratic rivalry between the living and the dead in the British Intelligence intersect with private indiscretions of the elite, since in this alternative world, death is not the end but entre to a better place. Unfortunately, I found Summerland rather disappointing in that even by the end of the novel, I was struggling to figure out precisely what was going on and who was doing it. Old Mr. Wood may be a reference to Odin, who is also known as Woden, which is close to the name Wood. They are all swimming in stagnant water until the big reveal in the end, which was a letdown. Having read all her books, I feel that bits and pieces were taken from past books to create this one. Summerland is a peculiar novel with the unique premise of mashing together the disparate concepts of the afterlife with Cold War spy tradecraft . Finally, the Lodgepole, tree of the worlds, is based on Yggdrasil, the world tree of the Norse, and Murmury Well (the well Coyote means to poison) is Mimir's Well. It was hard to read this book at times as this is a lot of parents’ worst nightmare. I wanted to learn more about Jake, Penny's boyfriend, and Hobby, her twin brother. Some of the biggest books out this fall promise to be epics full of magic, adventure,... Loss is a thing of the past. So the Great War was won with ectotanks and flyers, people channelling the energy of the dead - and now, the battle between the Republicans and Franco looks set to draw the great pow. Perhaps it was the plot or world in both books but I didn’t love either. The story is told from everyone's various viewpoints, but the reader never really gets to know these characters because they spend the whole book feeling guilty for whatever part they believe they. Great writing, a strong female character, and world building that may be a bit too deep. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Very few books that take place in the summer and are geared towards women can be considered quality books. All of these tropes can be done well, but weren't here as they felt rushed, I received this as part of my Brilliant Books subscription, and I must confess to a moment of dread and doubt when I opened the box. While Elin Hilderbrand is still a fantastic writer, and I still stayed up way too late to finish this book, I think the Nantucket thing is running its course. In Summerland, land of the dead, political leaders continue to influence their political scene, spy masters continue operations and mothers still expect a call from their children. The secret must be upsetting to the reader as well. She really pulled me into the lives of these characters and made it very hard to put down until I was done reading. See A Summer Affair. There were a couple of characters that I personally didn’t care to hear from, but overall not a bad book.
This should leave SO much material for story lines and character depth, but alas, it doesn't! Welcome back. “What happened when we died? Summer is a time for what is commonly called “chick lit.” However, no matter how mindless you want your book to be, some of it can be just plain awful. I am a big fan of twisty, turny narratives—of complicated science fiction and fantasy that demands much from the reader to keep up. This was a sad, moving tale not the light, feel good read the cover conveys. See Summer People. Her perfect parents so eager to overlook the obvious had me screaming out loud. This was my first novel by this author, who came highly recommended. The book spends its time having the three survivors and their parents coping with the next phase in their lives and trying to determine why Penny, the driver of the car, deliberately crashed the car.
Hannu arrived to the science fiction genre with quite a bang in 2010. My first Hilderbrand book, and I won't be picking up another anytime soon. To be quite blunt it is tragic. Demeter knew exactly why Penny flew into a rage and drove so fast that she killed herself and seriously injured her brother, but she wouldn't divulge the information. Loss is a thing of the past. Very familiar story but always enjoy hearing about life on Nantucket. This is not about "the bastard daughter of Harry Houdini" or a "map of the Other Side". 4 friends, who are juniors have gathered together to join their senior friends at the senior graduation parties.
I dislike books that hinge on a secret that is only being kept a secret as a way of moving forward the plot.
